HP Pavilion dm3 (2009)

$649.00 Released October, 2009

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Aluminum body. Lightweight and compact - 4.2 pounds, 1" thick. Available with switchable discrete graphics from the two major brands.

The Cons:With 13.3 size and 4.0 lbs., this is too big and heavy for it to be portable. The previous model, Dv2 at 12.0 size was more ideal portable in size and weight which HP sadly discontinued. Ultraportable design - lightweight and small at the expense of power, not good as a desktop / work laptop replacement. Claims an all aluminium body; however the bottom surface is made of an ugly plastic which ruins the style of the device.

The HP Pavilion dm3 is a slim and stylish 13.3" notebook offered by HP designed to give a balance of mobility and performance. It is housed in an all aluminum metal body that is less than 1" thick and weighs only 4.2 lbs with a 10 hour battery life making it an ideal transportable computer.

Product Shot 2 The 13.3" LED-backlit Brightview HD display improves brightness and clarity while using less energy than a typical LCD display. It is powered by either an Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Neo Dual Core processor and has a choice of Intel shared, ATI or NVIDIA discrete graphics to meet the multimedia demands of the typical consumer. When configured with the AMD Neo and ATI combination, PowerXpress used discrete graphics for enhanced visual performance and automatically swiched to shared graphics when unplugged to conserve battery life. The HP MediaSmart software makes it easy to enjoy digital music, Internet TV, videos, photos and other content with options for up to 500GB of hard drive space for ample media storage.

Design is outstanding. Looks far more expensive than it is.

  • 2

Highly configurable. This is a good thing, not a con as it provides user choice and control over price and performance.

  • 2

Ultra portable notebooks are not supposed to be desktop replacements but units that are easy to take everywhere and yet handle most common office and web functions. The dm3 does that very well.

  • -1

WAY overpriced for the performance it offers

  • -1

Look closely at the keyboard tray and you will see it flexes. This is a design flaw or the Dm3 is just smokes and mirrors?

  • -1

Price is too high for a laptop of this calibur.

  • -1

For it price, it should comes with an external drive like it's previous model DV2.

  • -2

too much variation in system specifications - will lead to a large system performance variation, consumer confusion / support issues

  • -2

Lacks more conectivity, I would like to see a USB port removed for a Firewire or ESATA port.

  • -4

    no optical drive

I have this laptop and it is great for me as I am always on the go.  I have had a bunch of desktop replacements and I am tired of lugging them about, I have a net book but it is jsut not quite enough to take care of my needs. this is like the third bed that goldielocks slept in... it is just right.  The battery is good but the unit is still new but you can replace the battery if it ever goes bad unlike some other units.  I also like the build quality of the unit, the metal case jsut adds to the solid feel of this and I do not feel like I will break it is I look at it wrong.
